The “Hygiene Prize 2011” awarded by the Rudolf Schülke Foundation

On behalf of the Rudolf Schülke Foundation the Hygiene Prize was awarded by the chairman of the executive committee, Professor Martin Exner, MD, in Hamburg on 25 November.

The Hygiene Prize, worth €15,000 was shared between two scientists. Either of them is Eike Steinmann, MSc from TWINCORE, Hannover with his work titled: "How Stable Is the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)? Environmental Stability of HCV and Its Susceptibility to Chemical Biocides" and the other is Franz Allerberger, MD from AGES, Vienna with his work titled "Listeriosis: a resurgent foodborne infection”.

The Rudolf Schülke Foundation awards the Hygiene Prize biennially to scientists who have achieved remarkable solutions to problems in the area of hygiene, microbiology and preventive medicine.

Along with the Hygiene Prize the Foundation awards the Hygieia Medal every two years. This medal is intended to honour those people who have devoted their lives’ work to hygiene and microbiology.

This year it was awarded to Professor Axel Kramer, Director of the Institute of Hygiene and Environmental Health, University of Greifswald, Germany.

Symposium of the Rudolf Schülke Foundation - 24 and 25 November 2011

Preceding the prize award and the award of the Hygieia Medal the Rudolf Schülke Foundation organised a two-day symposium on the topic: “The Role of Surface Disinfection in Infection Prevention”.

Hygienists and microbiologists from Germany, Austria, France, England and Switzerland participated in the symposium.
